There is a general tendency to believe that the past was the “good old days.” Hence, the Trump slogan of “Make America Great Again” resonates with a broad swath of the population, without any reference to what period is the reference point for the “Great.” Is it the Depression era of the 1930s? The war footing of the 1940s and early 1950s? The tensions of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and the fear of nuclear war forced a generation of school children to practice “duck and cover” in their classrooms? Is it the 1960s, the era of civil rights unrest in the cities, urban violence, the assassination of two Kennedys and a King?
